Dr. Savard,
How would you suggest dealing with a physician (on-call with a rural hospital) who requires family members to leave the exam room before he will proceed with providing patient care? The patient had been worked up by the nurse (insurance, BP, history, etc.). Upon arrival of the physician, the patient requested to have a familiy member present with them during the exam, evaluation and treatment. The physician will not allow it. In fact, the physician allowed the patient to leave the ER without treatment when the patient stated "either my family stays with me while you examine me or I'm leaving this ER". The physician stated "It's up to you. I can't stop you."

The physician says it is their 'policy' to have no family members in the room. What would you suggest we do to change his mind?

I cannot agree on everything you say in this article, but perhaps I missed some of the points you were trying to make.
